Dr. Mark Ring introduced the term "continual learning" in 1991. His 1994 doctoral dissertation at the University of Texas at Austin, Continual Learning in Reinforcement Environments, set out a definition and research program for agents that develop incrementally through their own experience. In 2015, he co-founded Cogitai, serving as CEO, to bring reinforcement learning and continual learning to industrial applications.
