Fairfax CASA's Inaugural Run for the Children Takes Strides for Victims of Child Abuse
FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On April 30, 2011, Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will host its first Run for the Children. The combination 10K race and 3K run/walk offers serious runners and families alike the opportunity to enjoy the charm and history of the Fairfax City courthouse area and surrounding neighborhoods. All funds raised will support Fairfax CASA and the work of over 175 CASA volunteers who advocate for the best interests of over 500 abused and neglected children each year.
"For the very first time, we have an event which brings the community together to champion the citizen-volunteers who advocate on behalf of our most vulnerable children," says Lisa Banks, Executive Director of Fairfax CASA. "We encourage plenty of team participation from our individual supporters and the business community to make the day a big success."
Each year in the United States, approximately one million children are placed under the court's protection because a parent or caregiver subjected a child to abuse or neglect. In Fairfax County, a child enters the court system once every 38 hours. These children need caring, dedicated adults to help ensure that they do not fall through the cracks of the child protection system.
That's where Fairfax CASA comes in. A nonprofit public charity, Fairfax CASA recruits and trains citizen volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children who are under the court's protection in Fairfax County. Nicknamed "the eyes and ears of the judge", CASA volunteers help ensure that these vulnerable children are placed in safe, permanent, and loving homes as quickly as possible. The juvenile court relies heavily on the CASA volunteer's work and requests that Fairfax CASA assign a volunteer to every case of abuse and neglect before the Court.
Race day start is 8:30 a.m. for 10K runners and 9:00 a.m. for 3K run/walk participants. Runners and walkers can register before the race at www.fairfaxrunforthechildren.com Prizes will be awarded to top finishers and all participants will receive a t-shirt and other give-aways while enjoying post-race refreshments and entertainment.
