Farid Foundation Donates $100,000 to Yale School of Medicine
Edible Arrangements® Co-founder and COO Kamran Farid personally delivers gift to Pediatric Oncology Research Department's Psychosocial Service; treated for leukemia at the children's hospital as a child
WALLINGFORD, Conn., March 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Farid Foundation, a philanthropic organization established by brothers Tariq and Kamran Farid, founders of Edible Arrangements®, announced today that a gift of $100,000 was made to the Yale School of Medicine.
The contribution has personal meaning for Kamran Farid. As a child, he was treated at the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital after being diagnosed with leukemia. Because of this experience, the money donated from the Farid Foundation will go to support Yale School of Medicine's Pediatric Oncology Department's Psychosocial Service, which helps support families through this difficult time.
"I know from personal experience that this terrible disease affects more than just the child," Kamran Farid said at a luncheon where he presented the check to Dr. Gary Kupfer, Chief of the Pediatric Oncology Department. "Having a child with cancer puts tremendous financial and emotional strain on the entire family. I saw the impact on my family as I was going through treatment, and it is my hope that this gift will provide both financial and emotional relief to families going through this experience now and in the future."
Dr. Kupfer said the contribution will be used in the Pediatric Oncology Department's Psychosocial Service to support patients' and families' psychological and neurocognitive needs while collecting research from each case to help children and their families that have yet to be diagnosed.
"We are honored that Mr. Farid chose our department for this donation," Dr. Kupfer said. "He is living proof that we are making progress in controlling this disease so that former victims can lead fulfilling lives. The next step is to assure that all those diagnosed with all types of childhood cancer grow up to lead full, healthy, and productive lives."
"This gift is a great and generous boost to a growing program at Yale designed to care for all children with cancer," added Dr. George Lister, Chairman of Pediatrics.
