Farmers Insurance® to be Recognized with Golden Horizon Award by Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation for Dedication to Helping Rebuild Disaster Stricken Communities

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., March 15, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Farmers Insurance®, the largest insurer headquartered in Los Angeles, will be presented with the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation's Golden Horizon Award at the organization's annual Horizon Award Gala on Wednesday, March 16 at the Alexandria Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Accepting the award on behalf of Farmers Insurance will be CEO Jeff Dailey, who will accept the award for the insurer group's notable efforts in helping rebuild the communities of Joplin, Missouri, and Sea Bright, New Jersey, following the devastating weather events that struck those communities.  In addition to donating thousands of volunteer hours and making financial contributions to support recovery efforts, Farmers led the creation of the first-of-its-kind Disaster Recovery Playbook, which compiles best practices for municipalities and communities in preparing for, responding to and recovering from disaster.

This year's Horizon Award Gala (formerly known as the Club100 Dinner) will bring together insurance professionals from dozens of leading companies to support local nonprofits as part of IICF's Western Division Community Grants program. Event proceeds will directly benefit local nonprofits with targeted programs in child abuse prevention, disaster preparedness, education, and health & human services.

Understanding that community recovery following a disaster can often use some additional help, Farmers initiated an alliance with local non-profits, the St. Bernard Project (SBP) and Rebuild Joplin, to help the city of Joplin with its recovery, following the devastating EF5 tornado that struck the community in 2013.  Farmers extended the collaborative effort with SBP in 2014, by adding Sea Bright, New Jersey and surrounding communities impacted by Superstorm Sandy, as areas for additional support.  As a result of these efforts, hundreds of Farmers volunteers have helped rebuild more than 100 homes for local families in these communities.

To extend the important learnings derived from their joint efforts, Farmers and SBP developed the innovative Disaster Recovery Playbook, which is a compilation of best practices learned from helping to rebuild New Orleans, Joplin, Sea Bright, and Rockaway, New York.  The Playbook is an open resource available free-of-charge for communities across the nation and available at disasterrecoveryplaybook.org.

Through its grant program, IICF reinvests funds raised by a region back into that same region and its communities. The full list of this year's grantees features community nonprofits across the Western division in the areas of specific focus to the region.
