Fathers' Rights Attorney and Advocate Jeffery Leving Discusses Sterilization vs. Freedom on HuffPost Live

CHICAGO, June 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Fathers' Rights attorney and advocate Jeffery Leving called a plea deal in a criminal case mandating the vasectomy of a Virginia dad "outrageous" and a form of eugenics during a HuffPost Live segment on Tuesday morning.

The video chat focused on the case of Jesse Lee Herald, who accepted a prosecutor's offer to undergo sterilization in exchange for a reduced prison sentence for a child endangerment charge involving his 3-year-old son.

Earlier this month, Herald, 27, was sentenced to one year and eight months of prison time after he was convicted of child endangerment, hit and run and driving on a suspended license in a crash in which authorities said his son was bloodied but not seriously hurt. The boy is one of seven children Herald has had with six women.

Leving and other critics said the unconscionable agreement brings to mind Hitler's World War II holocaust and eugenics, the practice of "improving" the human race through selective extermination.

"This is sterilization and manipulation of the human race by elimination of people considered inferior, which is wrong," Leving said during Tuesday's discussion led by host Marc Lamont Hill.

"You can't take away the fundamental human right for procreation from anyone. The US Supreme Court even found this unconstitutional for habitual criminals."

Later, Leving elaborated on the potential danger of Herald's case:  "The right to have children is a basic human right and an aspect of fundamental liberty which the Constitution guards for all Americans. Fathers cannot be excluded from their human rights simply because of their gender."
