Field of Screams Maryland Sets Sights on 2027 Return

Ranked #1 Best Haunted Attraction in USA TODAY's 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards, the event pivots to a multi-year transformation and looks ahead to welcoming guests back once the final County approvals are in place

OLNEY, Md., Sept. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Field of Screams Maryland, a 24-year family tradition and a Washington Post and Baltimore Sun pick for best haunted house and trail, confirmed today that it will postpone its reopening until 2027. Over its long history, Field of Screams Maryland has been the single largest fundraiser for the Olney Boys and Girls Community Sports Association (OBGC), generating more than $3.5 million to help offset the rising costs of running a large youth sports organization and to fund scholarships that keep sports within reach for disadvantaged families.

The reimagined event is the product of an 11-month redesign, featuring 22 all-new stations, an updated haunted house, and new infrastructure, lighting, and sound throughout. 

The event plans to reopen once OBGC's Special Exception is amended to expressly include fundraising events on the property.

"We are enormously proud of what our design and planning teams have accomplished, which makes this an especially hard announcement to make," said John Dixon, Director of Operations for Field of Screams Maryland. "What weighs on us most is what this season would have meant to others. Our 320 seasonal team members count on this income to get through the holidays, to help pay tuition, and to carry them into the new year, and the Olney restaurants and servers count on the tens of thousands of visitors this event brings to our small town each fall season. We were on track and ready to open, and we will continue to support OBGC as it works with the County, so we can welcome everyone back in 2027."

Steelhead Events and Productions (SHP), the event manager, credited Montgomery County's County Attorney's Office, Department of Permitting Services, and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission for their guidance and professionalism over the last year, and thanked the Olney community for its patience and continued enthusiasm. SHP also thanked OBGC for a partnership that has spanned more than fifteen years and supported thousands of local children and their families.
