Fifty-Nine Percent of Students Leave Romance Out of the College Choice Equation

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- StudyMode, an ed-tech company dedicated to helping students succeed in school, today announced the results of its inaugural Student Psyche Report. The study indicates that parents and educators may need to reframe their vision of students and their priorities.

"The StudyMode Student Psyche Reports are designed to provide insight into the true nature of the student population," said Blaine Vess, CEO and co-founder of StudyMode. "With Valentine's Day on everyone's minds, we decided to investigate how students balance relationships with the rigors of school. We found that the stereotypical picture of the lovesick student who puts dating above grades is no longer a reality. Our findings show that today's students put a high value on their education, and they're prioritizing their educational goals above matters of the heart."

Among the most interesting findings, the study revealed that a combined 75 percent of students want to wait between 1 and 10 years after college graduation before getting engaged. Additionally, 40 percent of students do not even plan to meet their future spouses until after college. This is in stark contrast to the antiquated stereotype of young women attending college to obtain their "Mrs. degree."

Other significant findings from StudyMode's Student Psyche Report include:

• Only 13 percent of students said they want to get engaged in high school or college; a mere 1 percent hoped to enter college engaged
• Only one quarter (26 percent) of students believe that dating negatively impacts their grades
• While 59 percent of students report never having skipped class to be with their significant other, 52 percent of students admit to texting their boyfriend or girlfriend during class
• Twenty-seven percent of students have enrolled in a class because they thought they might get a date out of it

Methodology
From November 2013 through December 2013, StudyMode surveyed approximately 1,000 student members. The sample set represents males and females ranging from high school through graduate school. Approximately 40% of respondents indicated they were in high school, 47% indicated college and 13% indicated graduate school. Respondents were predominantly female (64%).
