Final Curtain of Latest Screenings of The King of Trash, The Sold-Out Movie About California Waste Solutions & David Duong, In San Jose & Emeryville

The King of Trash, a hit documentary about the Duong family and their recycling company California Waste Solutions, has captivated communities all over California. This weekend, the last VIP screening of the movie in California in the latest tour takes place in San Jose. 

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 25, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The King of Trash, the feature documentary about Vietnamese-American entrepreneur David Duong and the family that built California Waste Solutions, Inc. and Vietnam Waste Solutions, returns to San Jose on Saturday for its final VIP pre-screening, with Duong, members of the cast, and director Errol Webber expected to meet the audience.

The Saturday, September 26 program screens from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at AMC Eastridge, 2190 Eastridge Loop. It closes a new round of Bay Area public screenings that has drawn nearly 1,000 registrations and wait-list requests after an eight-city U.S. pre-screening tour that brought more than 5,000 people into theaters in San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento, Orange County, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Orlando.

The film also screens Friday, September 25, at the 20th Red Rock Film Festival in St. George, Utah, where it was selected for the 2026 program. A further Bay Area date follows on Saturday, October 3, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at AMC Bay Street Emeryville.

A Community Company
The work that goes on behind the scenes at California Waste Solutions to make the cities it operates in clean, green and pretty are laid out in painstaking detail in The King of Trash, as well as the enormous sacrifices that went into making it all happen.

Crews are on the yard before most neighborhoods are awake; drivers and operations staff inspect trucks, check equipment, and walk the day's routes; once the fleet leaves the gate, collection moves through traffic that changes block by block. At the facilities, incoming material is received, flow is managed, and processing is kept in step with the street. Mechanics keep both the trucks and the sorting lines in service. When weather, volume, or street conditions change at a moment's notice, crews adjust. The work never stops.

The company measures reliability less by tonnage than by whether residents can depend on the service without having to think about it. Pre-dawn preparation, coordination between people and machines, and the refusal to treat any honest job as small are the same disciplines that took the Duong family from a single truck to a municipal recycling franchise serving two major California cities. The King of Trash records that continuity in documentary footage and in several dramatized sequences drawn from the company's own history.

Closing Out In San Jose
San Jose is being treated as the natural close for the VIP series. It is a California Waste Solutions service city and home to one of the largest Vietnamese-American communities in the country. For many families in the room, the history on screen is not distant. Meanwhile, the last showing of the current screening run will come to an end in Emeryville, close to the Duong family's Oakland home roots.

"We came to this country with nothing but hope. Everything we built came from hard work and faith," said David Duong. "The movie is as much an homage to the places we were able to build the company into what it is today, and the wonderful, conscientious people in it who are our customers and employees."

Directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Errol Webber, the 72-minute documentary traces the Duong family's escape from Saigon in April 1975, the open-sea crossing, a refugee camp in the Philippines, and the years of street-level recycling in San Francisco that grew into one of Northern California's major family-owned environmental services companies and a large-scale waste-management operation in Vietnam.

The new Bay Area run has drawn packed houses and unusually strong word of mouth from immigrant families who say the film is their story, not a corporate profile. Earlier dates in the current cycle included a sold-through showing in Hayward and a special screening in Dublin on September 19.

The production is preparing for official release and global distribution and has also been selected for the 2026 San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival.
