Financial Education Benefits Center Encourages Strong Relationships to Foster Better Health Outcomes

SAN RAMON, Calif., Jan. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- It's certain that having meaningful connections with other people is essential for well-being. Just how far-reaching are the effects of interpersonal relationships on health? That is still unknown, but scientists are slowly uncovering more and more data about how our human connections affect us. A 2012 sociological study found that married people fared better after heart surgery than their single counterparts, with a survival rate three times higher in the three months after the operation. Why precisely the outcomes were better, though, is still unknown.

Following better healing outcomes, good relationships of all kinds also correlate with longer life in general. Again, this could be for many reasons: someone with good friends and close family could be encouraged by their loved ones to live healthily and treat illness; a person with close connections could feel less stress overall, which decreases wear and tear on their body; or there could be an undiscovered biological cause-and-effect.

"We still don't always know why these strong connections make people healthier, but we almost don't need to," said Martinez. "Just knowing that fact should encourage people to better their relationships. And our upcoming benefits, specifically the counseling benefit, are meant to help people do just that."
