Studies agree that certain supplements are actually harmful if taken in excess. Many people hear about the benefits of supplements through advertisements that promote the "more is better" approach. For example, vitamin B12 shots are advertised to help people lose weight. Though there is no consequence to taking an excess of vitamin B12, there aren't proven benefits either. While supplement shots may seem like a quick solution for staying healthy in a fast-paced life, experts still agree that food is the best vessel for obtaining vitamins.
Vitamin C is known for cold prevention, and many take it in excess to try to get over a cold faster. But studies have shown no real benefit to taking more than 500 mg of vitamin C in a day; in fact, if taken in excess, vitamin C can cause diarrhea and increases chances of getting kidney stones. Similarly, taking more than 100 mg of vitamin B6 can lead to nerve damage and loss of control of bodily movement.
IV supplements have been pushed lately as a more efficient way to take supplements as they get inserted straight into the cells they are meant to benefit. But there's no evidence that IV supplements are more effective than regular ones. Additionally, concerns aren't limited to getting too much: by bypassing the gastrointestinal system that filters out potentially harmful molecules, people risk infection or allergic reactions.
"As a person in a non-medical field, it's hard to get good information," said Jennifer Martinez, Manager at FEBC. "We read headlines telling us we need supplements and others saying we don't if we eat right. And then celebrities promote fast and easy solutions. How are we supposed to know what's best?"
In a healthy diet, a person will get all necessary nutrients and shouldn't have to rely on supplements. Many people take multivitamin supplements to make up for a poor diet and to "cover their bases." While this seems like a good idea, it still falls short. Professionals always suggest a good diet before turning to supplements. However, when supplements are recommended (in cases of deficiencies, which are most common with age), it's best to take supplements with food to boost absorption.
A healthy diet is important for more than just supplement intake. It can improve other areas of life. With a healthy diet, a person can experience weight loss or gain toward a healthy weight, improvements in mood and energy levels and even benefits to skin.
