First Full Revision of ISO 9001 in a Decade Now Available from ANSI

ISO 9001:2026 sharpens the focus on quality culture, change management, and clarity of intent

NEW YORK, Sept. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) today published ISO 9001:2026, the first full revision of the world's most widely used quality management standard in more than a decade. It is available now from the ANSI Webstore.

For more than three decades, ISO 9001 has been the common language of quality in manufacturing, services, healthcare, education, construction, technology, and public administration. More than one million certifications have been issued worldwide.

At its core, quality management is about helping organizations build trust. ISO 9001 offers a clear, actionable framework to streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance customer satisfaction, without dictating how any organization must operate.

The 2026 edition updates that framework rather than replacing it. Core principles carry forward, so organizations already using the 2015 version of the standard can adopt the update without redesigning their systems. Updates to ISO 9001:2026 include:

• A clearer separation of risks and opportunities, encouraging organizations to seek out areas for improvement as actively as they guard against setbacks.
• Stronger emphasis on quality culture, values, and ethical behavior, recognizing leadership's role in creating an environment where quality can take hold. Quality reflects an organization's values and behaviors, not only its processes.
• Greater attention to change management, helping organizations handle transitions deliberately rather than reactively.
• Climate change carried into the main text, folding in the 2024 amendment to the 2015 edition.
• A modified Annex A, which explains the intent behind the requirements to reduce ambiguity and misinterpretation. The informative annex makes the standard easier to use, particularly for first-time users and small businesses.
• Closer alignment with other ISO management system standards through the most current harmonized structure, making integrated management systems more efficient to run.

The revision reflects U.S. input coordinated through ANSI. American experts shaped requirements now applied worldwide through the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO Technical Committee (TC) 176, Quality management and quality assurance, administered by the American Society for Quality (ASQ).

Certification to ISO 9001 is voluntary. The standard delivers value by helping organizations improve performance and strengthen the way they operate; certification offers a recognized way to demonstrate that a management system conforms to the requirements. Organizations pursuing certification should look for a certification body accredited by a recognized accreditation body such as the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Publication starts the clock on the move from ISO 9001:2015. The Global Accreditation Cooperation Inc. (Global ACI) sets the transition period for accredited certifications; a three-year window is in the approval process. Accredited certification bodies must themselves be transitioned to the new edition by their accreditation body before they can issue certificates to ISO 9001:2026, so organizations should plan transition audits with their certification body well ahead of the deadline.
