Flex OC Renewables, a FlexEnergy Subsidiary, Signs Agreement To Install and Operate Santiago Canyon Methane To Energy Project in Orange County, CA

Project to Use Environmentally Advanced Flex Powerstation™ FP250 Turbines; Provides an Energy Solution by Generating Power from Methane at Closed Landfill

SANTA ANA, Calif., Jan. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Yesterday, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved, by a 5-0 unanimous vote, a binding agreement with Flex OC Renewables, a subsidiary of FlexEnergy Inc (www.flexenergy.com), as the primary firm to install and operate a system that will provide power generation from landfill gas at the Santiago Canyon Landfill in Orange.

The Santiago Canyon project will be one of the world's most environmentally advanced facilities for generating power while destroying methane and related air pollutants. The Santiago Canyon project will also help Orange County meet the stringent air quality emissions for waste gases scheduled to go into effect in 2013. Santiago Canyon Landfill has been closed since 1988, and until now has "flared" or burned off methane created as trash decomposes.

As proposed, the Santiago Canyon project will use several Flex Powerstation™ FP250 turbines, which use an advanced thermal oxidizer to destroy methane reliably within a target temperature range that is high enough to avoid the creation of volatile organic compounds (VOC's) and Carbon Monoxide (CO), yet low enough to prevent the formation of Nitrous Oxide (NOx). An assessment of the available landfill gas at the site suggests that between 1.5 and 2 megawatts of power will be produced, which is enough to power between approximately 1,500 and 2,000 homes.

Flex OC Renewables will now enter the next phase of the project, which includes finalizing the utility interconnect and power purchase agreements, conducting environmental review, and preparing the site for project development.  The project is scheduled for completion in 2012.
