Florida Department Of Environmental Protection Honors The International Motorsports Center For Its Outstanding Recycling Efforts

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., July 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- International Speedway Corporation ("ISC") is being honored by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection ("DEP") for the outstanding recycling efforts at its International Motorsports Center, the world headquarters for ISC, NASCAR, GRAND-AM and Daytona International Speedway.

The Recycling Recognition Program award, which was presented today in a ceremony at the International Motorsports Center, recognizes ISC's broad, significant and visionary approach to insuring environmental sustainability by reducing the amount of waste that is deposited in local landfills.  The International Motorsports Center, which has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council with its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ("LEED") gold certification and the EPA's Energy Star certification, has a recycling rate of approximately 60 percent. 

Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Recycling Recognition Program was developed to encourage private businesses, institutions, schools, public organizations and citizens to increase recycling in order to reach Florida's recycling goal of 75 percent by 2020.

ISC participates in the largest tree planting program in sports in partnership with UPS. International Speedway Corporation – Headquarters Building – LEED Certified

In December of 2010, ISC announced its corporate headquarters building, the International Motorsports Center, had achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ("LEED") gold certification. LEED-certified buildings lower operating costs and increase asset value, reduce waste sent to landfills, conserve energy and water, are healthier and safer for occupants and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

As the Official Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Solution Provider of NASCAR, Eaton's partnership includes the installation of Level 2 electric vehicle charging stations at the International Motorsports Center.

Tree Planting Program

International Speedway Corporation participates in the largest tree planting program in sports through the NASCAR Green Clean Air Tree Planting Program in partnership with NASCAR, UPS, and the Arbor Day Foundation.  The program committed to planting 90 trees in every race market as well as support Florida's reforestation project.

At Track Sustainability Programs

Auto Club Speedway of Southern California

• Speedway Trains - In partnership with the local rail authority, Auto Club Speedway of Southern California and Metrolink received grant funding from the South Coast Air Quality District specifically for major event venues within their district that are not served by regular public transit services and experience high levels of traffic congestion during events.
• Sewer Treatment Plant - 6.2 million gallons of sewer and waste water generated by Auto Club Speedway of Southern California is diverted to California Steel Industries.  They use the water for the cooling process of steel manufacturing, and then dispose of the water through their industrial waste procedures.

Michigan International Speedway

• Green Venues Michigan Leader Certification by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth (DELEG)
• More than 900+ tons of construction materials have been recycled.
• First professional sports venue to join the Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership (MBP3) and Retired Engineers Technical Assistance Program (RETAP)
• Maintains approximately 200 acres of protected wetland in and around the facility.
• New solar-powered building is one of the largest U.S. producers of green energy in American sports. The sun-powered, 31-suite building and track media center is outfitted with approx. 8,000-square feet of solar panels across the rooftop that generates about 70,000 kw per hour - enough energy to power 439 fluorescent light bulbs, 79 incandescent light bulbs, 175 laptop computers, 19 desktop computers and 26 refrigerators.

Recycling Programs

ISC, in partnership with Coca-Cola, work hand-in-hand to provide opportunities for fans to actively participate in recycling programs. Specially designed receptacles in conjunction with appropriate messaging, encourage race fans to recycle used cans and bottles.

As the official track side environment service provider of ISC, Safety-Kleen has successfully assisted International Speedway Corporation facilities with the recycling of event waste materials such as oil, oil filters, absorbent, fuel, oily water, aerosol cans, and paint waste.

Future Sustainability Programs

Watkins Glen International and NextEra Energy have joined forces to launch a windmill project that will create a lasting renewable energy resource for the area. Approximately 50 turbines will be installed over the next two years. Each tower is capable of powering 2,900 homes annually.

Darlington Raceway and Clemson University have partnered together to grow switchgrass on speedway grounds, which will later be used in production of bio-fuels.

NASCAR Green Partnerships

NASCAR has the largest recycling and environmental sustainability programs among all U.S. sports.  NASCAR has the world's largest solar-powered sports facility, a tree planting program capturing 100% of the emissions produced by on-track racing, and the largest recycling program in sports with Coca-Cola Recycling, Coors Light, Safety-Kleen and Creative Recycling.
