Following a Recent Federal Court Ruling, Securus Refiled Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Global Tel*Link to Collect Damages Starting September 18, 2014
DALLAS, March 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Securus Technologies, a leading provider of civil and criminal justice technology solutions for public safety, investigation, corrections and monitoring, announced today that after a recent federal court ruling cleared the way, Securus Technologies has refiled its federal patent infringement lawsuit against Global Tel*Link (GTL) seeking damages from September 18, 2014.
"This ruling represents a significant victory for Securus," said Richard A. ("Rick") Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Securus Technologies.
"We have by far the largest patent portfolio in the corrections sector with over 130 patents having been issued and another 85 patent applications pending, which is three times the entire industry and four times as many as GTL. We have historically settled with the largest providers in the industry including GTL, and have collected in excess of $50 million in license fees. In that process, we have never paid a dime to others, and I believe that ultimately we will prevail in our efforts against GTL. GTL previously had a license agreement with Securus, but that expired in 2013 and they failed to renew it.
"My estimate is that GTL will owe us approximately $50 million in license fees – and I expect to collect that, and we have sought a permanent injunction that will deny them access to key products and features that they presently are offering. The facts and numbers are on our side," said Smith. "They settled with us in the past. I expect that this could be a multi-year effort – but we are up to that task. Our previous success rate in similar cases is a win-loss record of 16-0, so I would not bet against us prevailing, and we have and our investors have the patience to work through a multi-year litigation process. We have done that in the past and expect to do that with GTL. Justice will prevail here – leave no doubt," continued Smith.
