BOSTON, Jan. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- City Year, an education-focused, nonprofit organization, will mobilize hundreds of staff and corps members and thousands of volunteers for a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Traditionally, City Year regards the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a day "on," not a day off, hosting events in 21 communities across the country. Since 1988, City Year's 15,100 corps members have served more than 1.2 million students and completed more than 26 million hours of service.

"City Year's legacy of service to the community really shines through on a day dedicated to one of America's greatest leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," said Michael Brown, CEO and co-founder of City Year. "Dr. King taught us that life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?' City Year embodies Dr. King's message through service days and every day based on our commitment to ensure that every child has the ability to reach his/her full potential, which starts with a quality education."
All 21 U.S. City Year locations honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by commemorating the civil rights movement and Dr. King's dream of the "Beloved Community." In coordination with local partners, City Year brings together thousands of volunteers nationwide to engage in service projects each MLK Day of Service, such as working with seniors, assisting in soup kitchens, painting schools, restoring parks, and running educational activities for children. City Year encourages all citizens to view MLK Day of Service as an opportunity to give back to their communities.
"Growing up in an Eritrean household, education was heavily emphasized throughout my childhood as the driving force for success," said Faven Habte, corps member City Year Chicago. "This constant influence coupled with my belief in the power of service led me to City Year. This year, as part of the MLK Day of Service, I am honored to be leading a group of volunteers who will be repainting one of the hallways at the North Lawndale YMCA."
