Former SDNY Prosecutor Anthony S. Barkow Joins Jenner & Block's New York Office as a Partner in the White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice

NEW YORK, March 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Jenner & Block today announced that Anthony S. Barkow has joined the Firm's New York office as a partner in its White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice.  He was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan and Washington, D.C. for 12 years.  Mr. Barkow joins from the Center on the Administration of Criminal Law (CACL) at New York University School of Law, which he founded nearly four years ago and served as executive director.

As a federal prosecutor, Mr. Barkow tried more than 40 cases, including obtaining the conviction of lawyer Lynne Stewart for providing material support to the terrorist group of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, a/k/a the "Blind Sheik."  As a member of the Southern District of New York U.S. Attorney's Office's Securities and Commodities fraud unit, Mr. Barkow prosecuted insider trading, securities and accounting fraud and other matters. 

Jenner & Block's White Collar Defense & Investigations Practice in New York is headed by Peter B. Pope, the former Chief of the Criminal Division of the New York State Attorney General's Office and a former senior prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.  The practice also includes former Eastern District of New York prosecutor Katya Jestin.  Jenner & Block New York office Managing Partner Richard F. Ziegler is a former SDNY prosecutor.

Mr. Barkow's practice will focus on representing entities and individuals in criminal and regulatory investigations and proceedings as well as internal investigations and other litigation matters.

In his most recent federal prosecutor role, Mr. Barkow was an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York from 2002-2008, where he prosecuted some of that Office's most significant terrorism and white collar criminal cases.   In 2005, Mr. Barkow was awarded the Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service, the highest award bestowed in the United States Department of Justice.  

Mr. Barkow also previously served as Adjunct Clinical Professor of Law at New York University School of Law.  He is a frequent writer and commentator on criminal law issues.  In 2008, he established the CACL at New York University School of Law, and served as Executive Director of the Center from 2008 to 2011.  The Center is an apolitical advocacy organization and think-tank dedicated to promoting good government practices in the criminal justice system. 

Mr. Barkow graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan and cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he was Notes Office Co-Chair and Supervising Editor of the Harvard Law Review.  Mr. Barkow clerked for the Honorable Thomas P. Griesa, then the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
