Former UM Basketball Standout Takes Stake in Local Startup, MyRentHero
MIAMI, March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Former University of Miami basketball star, and current Phoenix Suns shooting guard, Davon Reed, saw an opportunity in the off-campus student housing market, and jumped at the chance to help a young startup that happens to be launching at his alma mater. MyRentHero, a real estate technology company focused on simplifying the off-campus housing process for students, parents, and landlords, announced last week that it has brought in Davon Reed as a shareholder.
"When I was in college, the process my teammates and I went through to find off-campus housing was extremely painful," explained Reed. "There was zero transparency and there was no central place for us to look for, and lock in our apartment. Not only was finding the right place a disjointed process, but also all the paperwork and applications were a headache. When I met the team from MyRentHero and saw what they are tackling, I knew this was a huge opportunity."
The company recently launched in Miami and Tampa, with plans to add another six markets by the end of the year. The current focus is to build awareness and gain student feedback on the solution, as MyRentHero has an ambitious product roadmap for the coming months.
According to co-Founder and CEO, Greg Rothman, bringing in Reed will give visibility and awareness to the company. "MyRentHero is providing a simple solution to a historically difficult process. Davon is not that far removed from knowing first-hand how hard it is to find the right place off campus." Reed, who signed with the Suns out of the 2017 NBA draft, is a hometown hero in Coral Gables. But Rothman says Reed can help beyond the sunny confines of The U, "Davon is a very smart guy who is going to help us with strategy and marketing as we prepare to roll out MyRentHero across the nation. Each campus is different and each market has its own set of challenges, but by getting Davon on board early, we will be able to leverage his strengths and set ourselves up for success."
