Forum das Americas' Mario Garnero Welcomes Brazil's Vice-President to a Master Class at Columbia Law School
NEW YORK, Dec. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Law School, one of the world's leading Law Schools, hosted a Master Class on 'Constitutional Law and Democracy' by Michel Temer, Vice-President of Brazil, in partnership with Forum das Americas, a Brazil-based think-tank on Hemispheric Dialogue chaired by Mario Garnero, founder of Brasilinvest, Brazil's premier merchant bank.
Michel Temer, who holds a Phd in Law, is an accomplished Professor of Law and an author of important textbooks on Constitutional Law. As he met Dean David Schizer of Columbia Law School, Brazil's Vice-President said: "I always dreamed of teaching a class at Columbia, and the fact that I have been given this opportunity constitutes my highest academic achievement."
Brazil's Vice-President examined the roots of constitutionalism in Roman Law and in the works of Rousseau and Locke. He also traced the simultaneous trajectories of democratic Government and the rule of law in Western societies. Temer additionally compared Montesquieu's approach to the three branches of Government with the Anglo-American tradition of a system of checks-and-balances. He concluded by describing Brazil's full-fledged democracy and institutional stability as trustees of Brazil's path to economic growth.
Mario Garnero gave closing remarks by highlighting the Vice-President's lifelong career in public service, which included chairing Brazil's House of Representatives three times. "Michel Temer has been a guiding light to Brazil's democracy and a stalwart of Brazil's political elite. Students at Columbia today have heard from one the architects of today's free and prosperous Brazil."
The lecture was co-sponsored by Columbia Latin American Business Law Association and Columbia's Center for Brazilian Studies. Attending the lecture were Law School students and special guests such as Albert Fishlow, Professor Emeritus, Columbia University; Tom Trebat, Executive Director of Columbia's Center for Brazilian Studies; Ambassador Maria Viotti, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations; Ambassador Regina Dunlop, Deputy Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, and Ambassador Luiz Seixas Correa, Consul-General of Brazil in New York.
