LOS ANGELES, July 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences, comprised of over 300 prominent education leaders, organizations and advocates, announced the addition of several new members to the Board of Governors. They include Larry Kramer, president, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation; Liza McFadden, president and CEO, Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy; Carolyn Miles, president and CEO, Save the Children; Mark Nieker, CEO and president, Pearson Foundation; Neil Nicoll, CEO and president, YMCA of the USA; Ed Doody, executive director, Educational Research Center of America; Rebekah Levin, Director, Evaluation and Learning, Robert R. "I'm honored to join the Board of the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences. By focusing on education's successes rather than merely harping on its failures, and by recognizing educators who exemplify what is best in the profession, the Board is a model for bold and effective leadership in a sector that needs good news," said Larry Kramer, president of the Hewlett Foundation.
The expanding cadre of national leaders joining the Academy represents growing support for recognizing the massive, collaboration required to educate children and the value of the cross-discipline Bammy Awards presented by the Academy to acknowledge the contributions being made every day.
Modeled on the broad scope of the Oscars, Grammys and Emmys, the Bammy Awards were created to be a cross-discipline honor celebrating the entire education village. This year's event will include awards to Dr. Timothy P. Shriver, chairman of the Special Olympics; education thought leader Sir Ken Robinson; pioneers of the flipped classroom movement, Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams; and the inspiring inner-city teacher Rafe Esquith.
"It's becoming increasingly clear that building bridges between the silos in education is an idea whose time has come. We press on," said Errol St. Clair Smith, executive producer.
