Traditionally, optical networking deployments had two options: a technology utilizing Wavelength Selected Switch Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (WSS ROADM) or passive fixed-filter-based solutions. WSS ROADM is powerful and flexible, but is expensive and requires state-of-the-art components; passive fixed-filter-based solutions are affordable but based on inflexible technology.
