Executive Summary
The total UK market for fruit juices, energy and juice drinks grew in value by an estimated 17.1% between 2007 and 2011, while volume sales increased by 7.4%. Following slow growth in 2008, the industry contracted in 2009 as the recession hit, but returned to growth thereafter. This reflects the popularity of the products that make up this market and the innovation and adaptability that characterises new product development (NPD); it should be noted, however, that rises in input costs are also partly responsible for value growth.
Although the health credentials and relatively low prices of soft drinks renders the market less vulnerable to the effects of recession than other markets such as spirits or beer, fruit drinks — especially juices — do still suffer during times of economic crisis. Premium products such as smoothies are particularly vulnerable and risk being crossed off shopping lists in favour of lower cost own-brand options.
Energy drinks appear to be much more resilient to the economic context of recent years than any other sector, exhibiting remarkable value growth of 64.4% since 2007. Globally, these products are taking market share from other sectors. Despite being relatively expensive and containing high levels of caffeine and sugar, products in this sector are extremely popular, particularly among younger people. In light of such strong success, it is likely that the sector will continue to grow in the future.
Consumer demand for convenient, environmentally friendly and healthy products is resulting in a focus on NPD within the juices and smoothies sector; these products already enjoy a very healthy image, yet manufacturers are increasingly focusing on producing new and enhanced versions of existing offers. These may include exotic blends; a focus on 'natural' products; the use of superfruits; or the addition of vitamins or other supplements. These innovations are intended to guard against impending market saturation and consumer concerns about the levels of sugar in fruit juice.
The sector is dominated by large companies, both in terms of production and distribution. It can be difficult for new companies to break into the market and compete with multinationals whose access to economies of scale gives them vast reserves for marketing campaigns and a greater ability to absorb rises in commodity prices. The market is also shaped by the fact that distribution is dominated by supermarkets, which are free to promote their own-brand products as they choose, sometimes at the expense of other brands.
Key Note forecasts that the overall value of the fruit juices, energy and juice drinks market will grow by an estimated 61% between 2012 and 2016. This will be a result of strong growth in the energy drinks sector; general growth due to a more stable economic conditions than evident during the review period; and rising input costs that will increase the value of the majority of products in the market.
