With over 30 years of legal experience, a distinguished background that spans journalism and public service, and more than 12 years working on eminent domain cases for a state DOT, Lawton adds rare depth of knowledge to aid the firm's mission of protecting property owners' rights.

Prior to joining the firm, Lawton spent 13 years representing a state Department of Transportation, including serving as a Special Deputy Attorney General. During this tenure, he oversaw hundreds of condemnation cases across multiple counties, developing an in-depth understanding of what truly matters to the government in eminent domain processes and strategies.

A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and Brown University, Lawton began his career in journalism, working as a newspaper editor and later serving as a press secretary for a U.S. Senator. His diverse background has shaped his approach to his legal service.

Licensed in both Georgia and North Carolina, Lawton is also admitted to practice in multiple federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. In addition, he has been repeatedly asked throughout his career to share his legal knowledge in Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs for other attorneys.
