Actress and producer's personal experience powers her support of Nema Health's mission of helping PTSD survivors find long-term healing
NEW HAVEN, Conn., Sept. 30, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Nema Health, the leading virtual trauma and PTSD program, today announced that actress, advocate, and best-selling author Gabrielle Union has invested in the company and joined as a strategic advisor. As a trauma survivor herself, Union will lend her voice to Nema's mission of helping all survivors find long-lasting peace and healing.
Union has spoken publicly and in a powerfully raw way about her experience enduring trauma. In the years since her sexual assault at gunpoint at the age of 19, she has become a vocal advocate for trauma survivors, using her platform to change the conversation about the realities of PTSD and to raise awareness about the staggeringly high prevalence of sexual violence for women and queer people.
Nema, which is led by clinicians and survivors, provides virtual PTSD care using the most effective clinical treatments, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Nema's care team of PTSD-trained therapists, psychiatrists, and peer mentors teaches patients how to challenge and modify unhelpful beliefs related to their trauma, so they can think about themselves and the world differently. After completing Nema's treatment program, 95% of patients experience noticeable improvement in their PTSD symptoms.
"I'm proud to join Nema Health as a strategic advisor to support their powerful mission of transforming how we understand and treat trauma and PTSD," Union said. "As someone who understands deeply the lasting impact trauma can have, I believe in Nema's commitment to compassionate care that truly meets people where they are. Together, we're working to break the silence, reduce stigma, and help individuals reclaim their healing and recovery journey."
In the U.S., an estimated 80% of people will endure a trauma and 30 million will go on to develop PTSD, often marked by debilitating symptoms like hypervigilance, intrusive thoughts & flashbacks, social avoidance, negative mood, and heightened anxiety. While many associate PTSD with veterans, the majority of people who experience trauma are actually civilians. Survivors of sexual violence like Union are at particularly high risk: the most common cause of PTSD is domestic and sexual violence, which studies show nearly 1 in 3 women will experience in their lifetime.
"Gabrielle's courage in sharing her story has already helped countless survivors feel seen," said Dr. Sofia Noori, CEO and co-founder of Nema Health. "It is a dream to have found someone with a powerful platform whose humanity, insight, humor, and advocacy are so deeply aligned with our mission. Gabrielle is someone who is willing to have the hard conversations to help others. It's an honor to welcome her as an investor and advisor at Nema."
