SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- GainSpan® Corporation, a leader in ultra-low power Wi-Fi connectivity for the Internet of Things, today announced that its low-power Wi-Fi technology is powering the DoorBot wireless videocamera doorbell. DoorBot allows you to see and talk with visitors through your smartphone or tablet from anywhere in the world. More than 10,000 DoorBot Wi-Fi doorbells have been sold since the product was introduced.

The DoorBot "Smart" doorbell leverages GainSpan's GS1011MEE Wi-Fi module to provide customers with reliable wireless performance, easy installation and extended battery life. The DoorBot app available for iOS and Android devices sends a notification to the user whenever someone pushes its button, sending audio and video over Wi-Fi to their smartphone. DoorBot users will be able to see who's standing at their front door and communicate with the visitor over audio.
DoorBot installs in a matter of minutes—it can be hardwired where your old doorbell lived, or run on an internal battery that only needs to be recharged annually. The camera uses LED technology to allow a view of visitors even in the dark. DoorBot is also compatible with Lockitron, allowing the user to lock/unlock the door's deadbolt with a smartphone application.
"DoorBot is what the modern doorbell should be. Smartphones and tablets are all around us—it only makes sense to be able to answer your door with them," said James Siminoff, inventor of DoorBot. "The magic of DoorBot is being able to deliver a feature rich product with a very long life battery—GainSpan technology is critical to achieving that. If we had to be wired only the product would be basically useless.
"And no other competitor provided the 'all-in-one solution' of the GainSpan Wi-Fi module, allowing us to get DoorBot to market quickly and easily," added Siminoff.
"GainSpan's ultra-low power Wi-Fi technology is gaining significant traction with Internet of Things innovators like DoorBot. Our technology is quickly becoming the core of many small, battery-operated IoT devices," said Bernard Aboussouan, vice president of marketing, GainSpan. "We're committed to pushing the boundaries on what IoT devices are capable of with our chips and modules. By offering the industry's lowest power consumption, we're empowering OEMs to design more effective products for more market segments, opening new doors for innovation in the ecosystem."
The GS1011MEE module provides high output power of 18 dBm for extended range operation. It features a full integrated networking stack, completely offloading the host microcontroller.
Compatible with iPhone, iPad and Android devices, DoorBot comes in two versions: the basic DoorBot costs $199, or a package with DoorBot and Lockitron costs $349. DoorBot is available at www.getdoorbot.com, through Amazon, or at select retail stores.
