FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., June 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Evolving to meet researchers where they begin their searching, Gale, a part of Cengage Learning, is supporting discovery by working with Google to index millions of documents in Google Scholar, and expanding the amount of content indexed by major library discovery services. In addition, Gale is promoting transparency in discovery through compliance with industry information standards to improve results for researchers and libraries.
"Information access is undergoing a revolution, and Gale is evolving, too. Indexing our content in Google Scholar where students and instructors want to do research is placing library resources directly into user workflow," said Paul Gazzolo, senior vice president and general manager for Gale. "Greater discoverability is vital and we're making material available through multiple channels – integrating content in the classroom through MindTap, enhancing our products for mobile access across all types of devices, and working closely with discovery service providers to optimize our content for library users."
Building on an existing effort, Gale will be enabling its full-text scholarly content – roughly 2.5 million articles aggregated from thousands of scholarly publishers – to be indexed by Google Scholar, a free search engine for scholarly research often used by students and instructors in higher education. Users beginning their research in Google Scholar will be able to discover content from Gale and its partners, and either be taken to the full-text of an article (if authenticated users of a subscribed library) or be directed to an abstract and information on how to access the article through their institution or local library. This integration helps researchers more easily discover Gale content and will bring more users directly into the library. In addition, Gale is making its content and technology more accessible and more easily integrated into student workflow in the classroom setting through Google Apps for Education.
Library Discovery Services
To aid in discovery of Gale resources through library discovery services, Gale has shared in the past year more than 750 million documents for 29 of its popular products with discovery services partners, bringing the total number of documents shared to over 1.1 billion across 31 products. Gale is following guidelines set by the National Information Standards Organization Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) and Knowledge Base and Related Tools (KBART) initiative to promote transparency in discovery and shape future activity. Gale is also putting resources behind helping libraries set up and optimize services by developing guides and other useful information. These activities are making it easier to discover Gale content in the library and improve researcher workflow.
