GARDENA, Calif., Aug. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On August 9, 2011, leaders from the City of Gardena will join with representatives from utilities, state government and the U.S. Department of Energy to "flip the switch" on energy waste and celebrate the launch of a campaign designed to reduce energy use throughout the city.
The event is open to the public and will begin at 5 p.m., at City Hall. Scheduled speakers include Mayor Paul Tanaka, Assemblymember Steven Bradford and City Manager Mitch Lansdell.
With support from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the city has mailed a CD copy of the Only You…Can Save Energy video magazine to every home, business and school in Gardena. The digital publication, supported by web-based content, offers a collection of the best-available resources for energy conservation – from home audit tools and savings tips to rebates and incentives – along with celebrity PSAs, games and energy-related job opportunities.
"In these times of economic uncertainty, every dollar saved is a step toward greater financial stability," said Gardena Mayor Paul Tanaka. "This grassroots energy campaign is really what Gardena is all about – people working together to do their part for a better community."
Contributors to the project include Southern California Edison, the Southern California Gas Company, the Golden State Water Company, the West Basin Municipal Water District and CalRecycle, along with Goldman Sachs Gives.
Gardena is the first city in the nation to implement Only You…Can Save Energy in its energy efficiency outreach. The video magazine, published by the non-profit Green Technology, was designed as a resource that any community can use to maximize the impact of its energy efficiency outreach. The city of Pico Rivera will be the next to send its own edition of the magazine to residents.
"An independent tracking service estimates that half of those who received the Gardena magazine have already spent time reviewing the contents," said Green Technology publisher Keith Miller. "We're very excited about this initial response and what it means to the city's efforts."
Gardena City Manager Mitch Lansdell sees benefits beyond energy conservation. "As people start utilizing the kit and benefiting from reducing their energy costs, it will put that money back into the economy in other ways, and it will further stimulate our economy. When people have more money, they're able to purchase and do things that stimulate job growth in other areas. Having disposable income helps to create jobs."
