AUSTIN, Texas, May 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Upland Software, the world's largest cloud provider of enterprise software for project, portfolio, and work management, today announced that three of its products have been positioned in Gartner, Inc.'s 2013 "Magic Quadrant for Cloud-based IT Project and Portfolio Management Services."

Upland was the only vendor with multiple products included in the report, reflective of the company's strategy of providing a family of best-of-breed applications individually tailored to specific needs while collectively capable of addressing a comprehensive range of project and portfolio management (PPM) requirements, from strategic planning to work execution.  PowerSteering, Upland's product for top-down program and portfolio management, was recognized as a Leader in Gartner's research. EPM Live, a leading enterprise work management and PPM solution built on Microsoft SharePoint, was the only product listed as a Challenger, while the Tenrox application for Professional Services Automation (PSA) and Project Workforce Management was positioned as a Niche player.

The Gartner report highlighted the use of multiple applications or configurations within the same organization as an increasingly popular approach to enabling PMOs and portfolio executives to conduct high-level investment, resource and financial planning while allowing project managers and team members to continue to use their preferred tools for managing daily work.  "Project portfolio-level IT PPM can be purchased as a standalone solution disassociated from whatever IT PPM software systems or applications are being used for project execution," the authors observe. "In fact, having both a top-down portfolio management IT PPM configuration and a bottom-up, execution-level IT PPM configuration, using separate instances of the same or different PPM products, is increasingly becoming a reality."

"With different stakeholder groups, such as portfolio-level versus execution-level users, each having different requirements, it is hard for a single tool to serve everyone well," commented Ludwig Melik, President of Upland Software. "We consider having three products positioned in the Magic Quadrant as confirmation of our strategy of providing distinct tools that can best meet each audience's distinct PPM and work management aims. For customers looking to adopt a 'sweet spot' deployment that incorporates both top-down and bottom-up approaches, we are the only cloud provider able to offer best-of-breed applications that can address both needs, while being integrated together to deliver end-to-end visibility through a single vendor."

The Gartner report also notes that demand for cloud-based IT PPM applications has continued to grow, as "These services have rapid time to value, and minimize financial commitment and risk."
