PHOENIX, June 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Giangi Townsend, the founder of popular recipe website GiangisKitchen.com, has shared some timely tips to help parents get their kids involved in the kitchen this summer.

"Cooking is a great way to get them involved with the family. Giangi's advice to parents includes:

• Each morning, start by asking your kids what they want for dinner. But don't just take orders. Have them prepare it with you. If they're too small to cook, then have them help with measurements — which as a bonus, enhances their math skills.
  
  
• Make the experience fun. Cooking is creative, and not clerical. Help kids see and appreciate the transformation that happens when different ingredients are combined and prepared.
  
  
• Give kids the freedom to get it wrong a few times before they start getting it right. Perfectionism is not the goal. Exploring, experimenting, and most importantly, sharing time together is the most important thing.
  
  
• Don't overlook the importance of teaching kids how to put things away and clean up. Reward them for their diligence by, for example, letting them stay up a little later than usual to watch a movie. When it comes to rewards, try and focus on experiences instead of things where possible, which is not only more affordable, but can be part of the overall goal of spending time together as a family and bonding.

Added Giangi: "When our son was little, we decided that one night a week, he was in charge of cooking. He got to pick the recipe, gather the ingredients, and make dinner for us. Our only pre-requisite was that it had to be a balanced meal or close to it. And yes, dessert could be on the menu to finish up a great meal.

Our role as parents was to offer ourselves as their sous-chefs and be given tasks to assist, not cook the meal, and love everything that was placed in front of us. In other words, he was in charge. 

It was amazing how much he loved that. Next thing we knew, cookbooks were out, cabinets were opened, and a list of groceries was created. It did not matter what meal he created. What mattered was that he was allowed to be creative, to choose the menu and play in the kitchen. We sat back, and while doing so, we not only had the best time, but we also spent a fantastic quality time together. A new family tradition was created, one that continues to this day."
