"Give A Squat 4 Pain" During Pain Awareness Month
ROCKLIN, Calif., Aug. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- During September, Pain Awareness Month, the American Chronic Pain Association (ACPA) is urging everyone to Give A Squat 4 Pain. The wall-squat challenge campaign will raise funds for pain management education and support programs that help those with chronic pain learn to live more fully.
Pain affects 100 million American adults, more than cancer, diabetes, and heart disease combined, and costs the nation as much as $635 billion each year in the direct costs of medical treatment and the indirect costs of lost productivity, according to the Institutes of Medicine.
It can be the result of illness or injury, be a side effect of treatment for other medical conditions, or have no identifiable source at all. Chronic pain does not discriminate; it affects people of all ages and backgrounds.
Since 1980, the American Chronic Pain Association has been helping people live fuller lives in spite of their pain. We offer the tools they need, in addition to what their health care provider offers, to improve their skills in the self-management of their chronic pain. We focus on helping the person with pain become an active partner on the health care team. In addition, we work to raise awareness among the health care community, policy makers, and the public at large about issues of living with chronic pain.
The Give A Squat 4 Pain campaign is simple, fun, challenging—and a little painful. Here's how people can participate and help raise funds to assist those living with chronic pain:
By yourself, or with family, friends, or coworkers, find a wall or any vertical surface and:
- Squat: Assume the squat position and hold it for as long as you can—longer than your friends. You'll start to feel the burn, but that's the point.
- Donate: While your legs still hurt, visit theacpa.org and make a donation. Be generous: Your pain will go away in just a few minutes.
- Inspire: Challenge others to complete a wall squat by sharing yours on social media. Don't forget to include #GiveASquat4Pain in your post.
