Globe University To Participate In 21st Century Workforce Development Models: A Minnesota-Germany Dialogue

MINNEAPOLIS, July 11, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Globe University will take part in 21^st Century Workforce Development Models: A Minnesota-Germany Dialogue, during which a Minnesota Delegation will travel to Germany July 12-19, 2014. The trip is designed to bring employers, government and education together to explore the successes of the German Vocational Education and Training (VET) model.

Michael Zdychnec, executive program chair of health care management for Globe University, will be among the 14 U.S. representatives traveling to Germany for the study tour. His participation is part of the College's continued effort to explore and deliver new educational delivery models to improve access, affordability and outcomes for the students while providing employers with the skilled workforce needed in the market today.

Other members of the Minnesota Delegation include representatives from the University of Minnesota, Rochester Public Schools, the Department of Employment and Economic Development, 3M, Mayo School of Health Sciences, the Department of Labor and Industry, Rochester Community and Technical College, the Minnesota Senate, Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce and Ardent Mills. The delegation is coordinated through the University of Minnesota's Program for Economic Development.

"Germany has a very successful education system," says Zdychnec. "The German education model not only ensures employability, but that the German workforce benefits from well-trained employees. New approaches to education are going to be required here in the United States, and receiving the opportunity to study other successful education models outside our borders is going to be extremely beneficial."

Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research's VET model involves dual training by combining learning at school with learning on the job in a three-year program. There are currently 1.5 million students in the program who spend most of their time in a workforce environment, receiving practical vocational training from qualified personnel based on training regulations. The federal government works with industry professionals to develop training programs that meet the needs of the workforce and train students accordingly.

The Minnesota Delegation will attend seminars to learn about how the VET model works, how different organizations are involved, what the costs and benefits are, what the results have been and how it can be applied to improve education in the United States. The delegation will also share ways in which the German education system can be optimized for a changing economy.
