Great Sadness at Ortec Finance on Passing of Founder Guus Boender

Prof. Guus Boender, PhD (1955) passed away in the early hours of Monday 15th September. He was laid to rest at a private funeral last Saturday. Guus was founder of Ortec Finance and a member of the board.  

In December 2013 Guus Boender was diagnosed with cancer. An intensive treatment followed which at first showed positive results. Through his drive and passion, Guus continued to remain active at Ortec Finance in the ensuing period. Earlier this summer he even returned to his office in Rotterdam for a few hours a week.

"As usual, Guus was overflowing with plans and ideas", said CEO Ton van Welie. "These plans were brutally interrupted in August however as his condition deteriorated and further treatment was without effect. Guus spent his last few weeks at home in peace, surrounded by his loved ones."

Professor 

Following his studies in econometrics, Guus Boender received his PhD from the Economic faculty of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1984 under the guidance of Prof. Alexander Rinnooy Kan, PhD. In 1988 at a young age he was appointed professor at the Erasmus University (Mathematical Decision Sciences) and later at the VU University Amsterdam (Asset & Liability Management). In the meantime, in 1981, he had founded ORTEC together with a few study friends, from which later on, in 2007, the independent company Ortec Finance originated.

Guus Boender was an authority on pensions. His knowledge and vision on financial risk and return was internationally renowned. Reactions from the pension sector on his passing reaffirm this as he is referred to as "an original and unconventional thought leader", who has "inspired many within the pension sector and in other areas". "Guus was always thinking one step ahead when it came to pensions and the pension system."

Warm and social 

Van Welie speaks of great sadness among colleagues at Ortec Finance and clients with whom Boender was in contact. "A good, intelligent and above all warm and social person is no longer among us. Guus has had a guiding influence on the development of Ortec Finance. First during its founding and in the early pioneering days; then afterwards during the growth and development of its financial services; and finally during its transformation into the independent company it is today. He has also left his mark on thoughts about the company's future. As a visionary, Guus' ideas will continue to benefit Ortec Finance for a very long time to come."
