POULTNEY, Vt., Jan. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- While summer is a time for students to take a break from the academic rigors of the school year, it also offers a window of time to explore their passions with dedicated teachers and motivated student colleagues. To meet this need, Green Mountain College is launching the Vermont Summer Academy, a co-ed academic program for rising eighth through 12th-grade students.
One-week courses are offered in Adventure Education; Creative Arts (painting, drawing and sculpture); Culinary Arts; Design & Build: EcoConstruction; Fiction Writing and Poetry; Environmental Studies; Forensic Science; Journalism and College Prep Writing and Veterinary Science. Students will take one course per week, but they will have the option to take multiple sessions of one course, or explore several different courses, during the weeks of July 21-July 27, July 28-August 3 and August 4-August 11. All courses are hands-on and project based, and students will practice the critical skills of collaboration, critique, project planning and presentation.
"We deliberately picked subjects that are areas of strength in our curriculum," said College president Paul Fonteyn. "Our faculty has developed cutting edge programs that prepare graduates to be thoughtful and productive professionals as they enter promising career fields. We have tremendous resources and knowledge to share with high school students who are just beginning to seriously examine their career choices."
Most programs will be held on the College's lovely Poultney campus. Culinary Arts courses will be offered July 7-12 and July 14-20 at the Green Mountain College Lodge at Killington Resort.
The Vermont Summer Academy also offers opportunities for young people to live and study in a real collegiate atmosphere. Students stay in the residence halls with instructors and residence life staff who provide 24-hour supervision. Intensive classes during the day are balanced by a variety of fun indoor and outdoor activities using the College's facilities including playing fields, a gymnasium and a swimming pool. Team-building activities are designed to build community, strengthen friendships and foster the personal growth of each participant.
