Green Science Alliance Developed NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents: Class of Green Chemistry Material) based Beauty Serum Cosmetic
KAWANISHI, Japan, Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Green Science Alliance is the GreenTech startup company from Japan. They have developed NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents) based Beauty Serum Cosmetics. They are sold on their company E-commerce internet shopping site.

The company has been developing various types of NADES and this time, they applied one of their NADES products into consumer cosmetics products. It could be the first time in the world to commercialize actual NADES based beauty serum (according to internal research).
Recently, the cosmetics and dermocosmetics (dermatology and cosmetics) industries are undergoing a major transformation, driven by the principles of green chemistry and rising consumer awareness of clean beauty. In the cosmetics sector, green chemistry is defined as designing and manufacturing products using methods and ingredients that minimize negative impacts on human health and the environment. This technology reduces the use of toxic, petroleum-derived volatile organic solvents by replacing them with natural substances. Moreover, the concept of green chemistry also encompasses factors such as the use of renewable and biodegradable raw materials, the minimization of waste during manufacturing, a reduction in the use of additives, and lower water and energy consumption throughout the entire production process.
In traditional skincare and cosmetic formulations, synthetic glycols, petroleum-derived penetrants, and strong chemical preservatives are widely used to enhance active ingredient stability, optimize skin penetration, and improve texture. However, these ingredients have become increasingly problematic in recent years due to their high carbon footprint and toxicity. Consequently, developing multifunctional, bio-based, and eco-friendly sustainable solvents has become a leading-edge frontier in modern cosmetic engineering.
Solvents are the basic component of most cosmetic formulations because they make it possible to blend various ingredients used in cosmetics simultaneously. Solvents are crucial elements that control the rate and transport efficiency of active ingredients as they penetrate the skin barrier. They also play a vital role in delivering these ingredients deep into the skin (such as the dermis), thereby directly enhancing the efficacy - or bioavailability - of the formulation. However, many of these solvents come from petroleum, and some can harm living things. Therefore, they present risks to human health and the environment. In response to tightening regulations on substances presenting carcinogenic or mutagenic risks, the cosmetics industry urgently needs to switch to alternative ingredients.
As a result, there has recently been a growing interest in bio-based solvents and natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) in the cosmetics industry.
NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents) have recently attracted attention as a next-generation green solvent in the cosmetics field for applications such as dissolving poorly soluble ingredients, high-performance moisturizing, and low-irritation corneum care. A compound synthesized from a hydrogen-bond donor and a hydrogen-bond acceptor that is liquid at room temperature, mainly characterized by the following:
- NADES can stably dissolve highly bioactive and skin-beneficial components at high concentrations, regardless of whether they are hydrophilic or hydrophobic, even if these components are poorly soluble in conventional organic solvents, oils or water.
- They serve as green solvents that efficiently extract valuable compounds—including antioxidants, flavonoids, carotenoids, and polyphenols—from biomass such as plants and algae. This approach reduces environmental impact and eliminates the use of toxic, petroleum-based organic solvents.
- Unlike volatile substances like ethanol or alcohol, NADES do not evaporate, allowing them to remain as active ingredients in cream and gel cosmetics.
- NADES can control how fast and effectively active ingredients pass through the skin barrier, delivering them deep into the skin (such as the dermis).
- NADES can act as a natural moisturizing and water-retaining agent, capable of dissolving and stabilizing delicate, skin-beneficial active ingredients such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
- NADES can be applied as a thickening moisturizer that balances long-lasting functionality comparable to polymers with a pleasant, non-sticky texture
This newly developed serum by Green Science Alliance contains their NADES, which mainly improves the moisturizing effect and ensures a good, non-sticky feeling upon application. In the future, they plan to develop serums formulated with active ingredients derived from plants and biomass.
- What is DES (Deep Eutectic Solvent)?
DES is a new type of solvent with performance characteristics similar to ionic liquids. This system is formed from a eutectic mixture of a Lewis or Brønsted acid and a base, and is composed of various anionic or cationic species. This is a compound that is liquid at room temperature and can be synthesized by using a hydrogen-bond donating compound and a hydrogen-bond accepting compound as raw materials. By combining two or more compounds to form a eutectic system, a lower melting point can be achieved compared to each of the individual components. Synthesized DES are characterized by a low vapor pressure, flame retardancy, high thermal and electrochemical stability (a wide potential window), and other properties. Another major advantage is that they are generally less expensive and more often harmless than ionic liquids.
- What is NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent)?
Deep eutectic solvents made from natural components are specifically called NADES (Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents), and they serve as lower-toxicity and environmentally friendly solvents. The components used as raw materials are often naturally derived, such as amino acids, organic acids, saccharides, and choline. This green solvent lowers the melting point, remaining liquid at room temperature, and can be applied to environmentally friendly green chemistry.
Applications of NADES include electrolytes for batteries, solvents for organic synthesis, gas adsorption, and the dissolution of cellulose and lignin. They are also applied in plasticizers, biofuel purification, and the extraction of metals such as rare earths and rare metals. Furthermore, NADES are used for the extraction of various plant-derived substances, including catechins, caffeine, flavonoids, and alkaloids like anthraquinones. Leveraging these dissolution and extraction effects, the present case demonstrates their application in cosmetics.
