
Green Science Alliance Developed Plant Biomass based, TPO & HEMA-free Vegan Gel Nail Polish

Environmental issues such as global warming, environmental pollution, and deforestation are serious problems, and it is said that they are caused by factors like the increase in atmospheric CO2 and population growth. Petroleum-based plastics increase atmospheric CO2 during production and cause plastic pollution after disposal. In contrast, when products like plastics and resins are made from plants, they can be considered carbon-neutral materials with lower CO2 emissions than petroleum-based plastics, as plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere through respiration.
Green Science Alliance have dedicated themselves to the R&D of leading-edge environmental and energy technologies, driving progress toward decarbonization, carbon neutrality, and the realization of a sustainable society.
With the goal of replacing all petroleum-based materials and products with plant- and biomass-derived alternatives, they have been developing materials derived from non-petroleum, plant and biomass sources. These include biodegradable resins, biodegradable plastics, coating materials, paints, glue, plasticizer, lubricant, 3D printed products such as furniture, nanocellulose, biochar etc… all of these products made from various plants biomass based materials and organic waste such as wood waste. This development concept was compiled into an academic paper written by Dr. Ryohei Mori (Ph.D. in Engineering), the company's CEO, and was selected for the front cover of RSC Sustainability (Royal Society of Chemistry).

Based on this development concept, Dr. Hirotoshi Umemoto and Dr. Ryohei Mori (both Ph.D. in Engineering) of the company has recently developed a gel nail polish derived from plant biomass that is also free of TPO, HEMA and TMPTA.
TPO stands for Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide, (excluding 'D' from the abbreviation), which is a photopolymerization initiator necessary for curing gel nails with an LED/UV light. While TPO is not subject to cosmetic ingredient restrictions in Japan, its marketing in Europe has been banned due to concerns over its link to reproductive toxicity based on animal testing.
HEMA, short for 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate, is a primary resin ingredient in gel nail polishes that cure under LED/UV lights. However, skin contact with uncured HEMA can easily cause irritation and allergic reactions, potentially leading to symptoms such as itching, redness, and blisters.
TMPTA stands for trimethylolpropane triacrylate, which is also a main resin component of gel nails that cures under LED/UV lights. While TMPTA is not subject to cosmetic ingredient restrictions in Japan, it has been reclassified as a "Category 2 Carcinogen" under Europe's revised CLP Regulation. Furthermore, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies it as a Group 2B substance, suggesting potential carcinogenicity. Their developed product does not contain this TMPTA either.
While several TPO- and HEMA-free gel nail products are already on the market, gel nail products that are free of both TPO and HEMA while also being plant-based or bio-derived are extremely rare, both in domestic and international markets. While their current plants and biomass components range from 22% to 25%, they aim to further increase the biomass content in the future
Gel nails that are free of TPO and HEMA can reduce the risk of developing allergies, making them relatively safe to use even for individuals with sensitive skin or self-nailers.
Moving forward, Green Science Alliance will speed up the rollout of these developed products in domestic and international markets.
