GreenCure® Employees Start a Company Garden

CONKLIN, N.Y., June 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Does a company garden make sense? It does when the company growing the garden specializes in distributing a fungicide.

While the company's office is located at the fringe of an industrial park in upstate New York there is enough room behind the metal frame building for a 10 by 30 foot garden.

The garden has a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, pole beans and peas, peppers and most interestingly giant pumpkins. Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that affects many of these vegetables and will be the focus of the GreenCure demonstrations.

GreenCure Fungicide, developed by renowned Cornell University Plant Pathologist Dr. Ken Horst, is a foliar fungicide that prevents or controls 25 different fungal diseases. In more than 200 university trials and 15 years of use the product has been found to be as effective or better than chemical fungicides with the distinct advantage that GreenCure qualifies for the USDA's National Organic Program designation for use in organic production.

This designation, along with the fact that vegetables can be harvested an hour after spraying and that no respirator is required while spraying GreenCure, is making the fungicide a favorite of indoor and hydroponic gardeners as well as those growing roses, flowers, grapes, fruit trees and traditional or organic vegetables.

"Pumpkins are very susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, so the opportunity to use GreenCure in the garden to prevent or cure this disease is what we're looking for," says Yeager. "Growing giant pumpkins makes this project even more exciting."

When the company decided to have a company garden they turned to giant pumpkin growing expert Stuart Shim.  Mr. Shim, who operates a blog called http://www.pumpkinmania.blogspot.com, is a GreenCure product advocate and helps educate gardeners about the use of GreenCure in his pumpkin growing workshops in California. Mr. Shim provided the starter seeds and lots of inside knowledge on how to grow pumpkins that are larger than your typical jack-o-lantern.

Yeager says the opportunity to try to grow giant pumpkins is an exciting challenge. "If we can grow even a 100-pound pumpkin, we'd consider that a great success, but the potential exists to grow pumpkins that are much, much larger," says Yeager, explaining the seeds come from championship pumpkins that topped out in the thousand-pound range.
