Greenville Technical College is reaffirmed for accreditation by SACSCOC

GREENVILLE, S.C., July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Greenville Technical College, first accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) in 1968, has been reaffirmed for accreditation by SACSCOC for a ten-year period -- the maximum time period that can be granted -- ending in 2023.

Accreditation signifies that the college (1) has a mission appropriate to higher education, (2) has resources, programs, and services sufficient to accomplish and sustain that mission, and (3) maintains clearly specified educational objectives that are consistent with its mission and appropriate to the degrees it offers, and that indicate whether it is successful in achieving its stated objectives.

The reaffirmation process begins with a rigorous self-examination and includes both off-site and on-site reviews. Included in the reviews are a sound financial base and financial stability adequate to support the institution's mission and scope of services; physical resources adequate to support mission and scope of programs and services; programs, services, and activities that are consistent with the mission and intended to promote student learning; library collections and services consistent with degrees offered; and faculty adequate to support the institution's mission and ensure quality and integrity of academics.

Accreditation by SACSCOC means that students who begin their education at Greenville Technical College and take approved courses can transfer credits to other regionally accredited colleges. With USC, Clemson University, USC Upstate, College of Charleston, and most of the state's well-known four-year institutions also being regionally accredited by SACSCOC, students transferring from Greenville Technical College can expect a seamless process.

Accreditation is also important as graduates seek employment. The rigorous standards required by SACSCOC allow employers to feel confident about the quality of education received by job candidates listing Greenville Technical College on their resumes.

As part of the reaffirmation process, Greenville Technical College developed a Quality Enhancement Plan, designed to impact student learning. Greenville Technical College implemented an initiative called Steer Your Career, which matches a student's interests and abilities with the right academic program.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America along with other international sites approved by the Commission on Colleges that award associate, baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degrees. The Commission also accepts applications from other international institutions of higher education.
