Greenway Takes Leadership Role in Multiple Regional Extension Center Initiatives

CARROLLTON, Ga., July 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Greenway Medical Technologies, Inc., provider of the integrated, single-database electronic health record (EHR), practice management and interoperability solution PrimeSUITE, has established industry leadership in the advancement and success of the Regional Extension Center (REC) initiative through committed resources in development, thought leadership, collaborative marketing and the successful achievement of meaningful use at the heart of REC practice conversion from paper-based systems.

NYC REACH functionality

Upon being named in April, 2010 by the New York City REC as a preferred EHR partner, Greenway has been collaborating with NYC REACH to deliver innovative and tailored public health reporting solutions through Greenway's cloud technology to further the REC's role in connecting its region and expanding interoperability.

"The NYC Health Department has been working closely with Greenway to develop more public health functionalities for extension center members. When this work is complete, Greenway users will receive public health alerts specific to their patients and feedback from the health department on their quality measures. Following selection in September, 2010 by the Massachusetts e-Health Institute as a preferred EHR solution, Greenway's PrimeSUITE was selected by Northgate Medical PC, a five-provider primary care practice in Springfield, Mass., now the subject of an ongoing documentary series on REC program fulfillment.

"Massachusetts e-Health walked us through a variety of programs and services designed to help us successfully adopt an EHR system and eventually achieve meaningful use," said Jose Azocar, MD. "From there we solicited demonstrations from seven or eight EHRs. We selected PrimeSUITE because the clinical functions were more intuitive and adaptable to our practice."

Azocar and his practice is featured in a testimonial documentary being produced by the Massachusetts e-Health Institute's Regional Extension Center that plans to follow his practice through the EHR selection, deployment and training process to detail the collaboration between the REC and its preferred EHR solutions which is fundamental to the program's fulfillment.

Greenway takes industry leadership roles

At HIMSS 12 this Spring in Orlando, Justin Barnes, Greenway vice president of marketing, industry and government affairs, participated with newly appointed National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Farzad Mostashari, MD, ScM, at an REC Town Hall to assess the program's progress and future strategies in line with those of the Health Information Technology Research Center (HITRC).

Barnes has also been appointed co-chair of the national REC Community of Practice (CoP), made up of REC administrators, ONC executives, EHR Association members and other certified EHR software providers, to foster EHR adoption best practices, specific EHR training and implementation pathways, and establish effective communication channels between the RECs and its targeted providers.

"It is clearly vital that the REC programs remain healthy and sustainable past the initial two-year grant periods, and there are many ways to achieve that as health IT innovations and quality reporting programs put forth by ONC and CMS continue," said Barnes, chairman emeritus of the EHR Association. "Our goal at the CoP is to advance the REC mission and merge its successes into the construction of upcoming accountable care models, for example, to integrate overall healthcare goals."

REC majority selects PrimeSUITE

Overall, the REC program has been granted $667 million to create 62 RECs connecting 100,000 providers in the conversion process from paper-based systems and to achieve meaningful use, targeting primary care practices, critical access hospitals, community health centers and related healthcare organizations in predominantly underserved areas. To date, nearly 40 RECs have established operations, with more than 80 percent including Greenway and PrimeSUITE 2011 as a solution of choice or option for their targeted physicians.
