Grupo Salinas and Its Cultural Arm, Fomento Cultural Grupo Salinas, Call for Entries for the Fifth Annual Premio Nacional de la Plata Hugo Salinas Price Design and Silversmith Competition

MEXICO CITY, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Grupo Salinas and its cultural arm, Fomento Cultural Grupo Salinas, make a call for entries for the fifth annual Premio Nacional de la Plata Hugo Salinas Price 2010 design and silversmith award. The event is held in conjunction with Mexico's SEDESOL development ministry, the FONART artisan development fund and the Museo de Arte Popular.

Fomento Cultural Grupo Salinas is a project by Mexican entrepreneur Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego to support and promote culture as a fundamental value of Mexican society.

The Premio Nacional de la Plata competition this year is part of the 2010 bicentennial celebration of Mexico's independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution, events that will serve as both a backdrop and inspiration for entries.

The Hugo Salinas Price award is one of the premier design and silversmith competitions in Mexico, with categories that include jewelry design and sculpture with techniques of casting, metal carving, hammering, gem incrustation and filigree, to name a few.  

Conceptual models will be presented to the judging panel, with a period of three months to complete pieces. The awards ceremony will take place on September 9 at the Museo de Arte Popular, with selected pieces exhibited in September.

Contest organizers expect entries from throughout Mexico, including traditional silverworking states such as Zacatecas, Guerrero, Chiapas, Campeche, the state of Mexico, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacan, Morelos, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosi, Yucatan and Mexico City, where the FONART artisan development fund will promote participation. Contest information will also be available at Elektra stores and Banco Azteca branches throughout Mexico.

The Premio Nacional de la Plata Hugo Salinas Price is a tribute to the effort of Don Hugo Salinas Price to promote silver as a currency option through the Asociacion Civica Mexicana Pro Plata, A.C. and the Premio Nacional Pro Plata, with support from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), among other institutions.

The award includes total cash prizes for peso equivalents of about US$100,000 in different categories in addition to the prestige of the prize.
