Why: Both women and men have signed up for Gulf Electricity in record numbers through its website, www.gulfelectricity.com, based on the "Are We Turning You On Yet?" campaign theme and the Gulf Electricity offering, which delivers significant savings to Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and New York residents with competitive pricing and the "Power Points" rewards program. This year alone, Gulf has delivered millions of dollars in electricity savings to customers who have switched to Gulf Electricity.
Details: Each day, consumers around the world are bombarded with marketing messages and images promoting everything from hamburgers to automobiles. As Gulf has for over 100 years been an iconic brand associated with the sale of gasoline products, the entry into the retail electricity business presented some interesting hurdles, most challenging was simply creating an awareness with consumers that Gulf was now in the retail electricity business. Gulf adopted a strategy utilizing the development of a billboard campaign to introduce this new service. The imagery, like any effective ad campaign, is designed to be playful, attention-getting, and different from other competing messages consumers are exposed to. It was purposed to generate publicity, awareness and get people talking about "Gulf Electricity." We succeeded.
While some viewers of the billboards have personally found the imagery to be not of their liking and have freely expressed their very spirited views, the overwhelming response and opinions conveyed on the messaging have been tremendously supportive and in concert with the playful innuendo imbedded in the tagline, "Are We Turning You On Yet?" The initial ads were just the first "leg" of the campaign and now the company is rolling out the second "leg" of the effort which completes the story of "we are more than what you thought we were."
