Community Leaders, Volunteers, and Future Homeowners Gather to Celebrate the Start
of Eight New Affordable Homes in Camarillo
CAMARILLO, Calif., Feb. 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Community leaders, volunteers, and future homeowners gathered on Saturday, Jan. 25 to celebrate the groundbreaking of Vista Campanario, Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County's affordable ownership housing development in partnership with Many Mansions, and the Area Housing Authority of the County of Ventura, who are building low-income rental units on the same site, and Staples Construction, our construction partner. The event marked a significant milestone for Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County as eight families prepare to embark on their journey to homeownership.
Darcy Taylor, CEO of Habitat Ventura, opened the event by emphasizing the impact of community support: "You being here today acknowledges the fact that the work we're doing is actually having a tremendous impact for these families and our community."
The morning was emotional and moving, as speakers highlighted the importance of stable, affordable housing. David Schlueter, Habitat Ventura Board Chair, shared his personal connection to Camarillo and the families who will soon call Vista Campanario home: "Camarillo is my home too, and now I have these wonderful neighbors. Everyone deserves a safe, secure, and healthy home."
Camarillo Mayor Kevin Kildee recognized the collaborative effort that made this project possible, stating, "This would not happen if it wasn't for all of the visionary thinking and the hard work of the volunteers who have put in so much to create this outstanding facility. It kind of takes my breath away."
Ashley Bautista, Chief of Staff to Ventura County Supervisor Gorrell, reflected on the meaning of home and community: "Homes are a place where we celebrate birthdays, our kids' first steps, a place where you can kick off your shoes and just be yourself. In a moment of loss in our community (referring to the recent Southern California fires), it's beautiful to be here in a space where people come together to help one another out."
As golden shovels hit the dirt, the morning affirmed the fact that affordable homeownership transforms lives. The Vista Campanario project represents more than just houses—it symbolizes security, stability, and opportunity for eight families who are working hard to achieve their dream of owning a home.
With construction now underway, Habitat Ventura invites the community to continue supporting these families through volunteering, donations, and advocacy.
