Harlem Globetrotters Team Up with Selective Service in Birmingham To Help Promote Registration Awareness
Fans have a chance to take the "Shot of the Game" at March 8th Show
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Feb. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Harlem Globetrotters, legendary American icons of sports, entertainment and family values, are teaming up with the Selective Service System to spread the word that registration with Selective Service is quick, easy and critical to every young man's future.
And in true Globetrotters style, they're doing it in a way that's fun and fan-friendly.
All fans 16 and over can "Like" Selective Service on Facebook for a chance to win a Globetrotters Prize Package and the Selective Service Shot of the Game at the Globetrotters' Birmingham game on Sunday, March 8 at 4:00 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center. Details are on the top post at www.facebook.com/sssregistration. "Likes" must be received by Monday, March 2, at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Globetrotters are giving away a family four-pack of tickets to the Philadelphia game, a signed team T-Shirt and a pregame half-court shot to the winning fan.
"Registering with Selective Service is something every man has to do to make sure he's got a shot at a good future," said Lawrence G. Romo, Director of the Selective Service System. "Working with groups like the Harlem Globetrotters helps us get that very important message out in ways that might not otherwise reach people who need to hear it."
Important opportunities tied to registration
Federal law says that virtually all men living in the United States must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Men who fail to register by age 26 can be PERMANENTLY BARRED from:
- Placement in federally funded job training programs.
- Good government jobs, including some careers in law enforcement.
- Driver's license renewal in most states.
Additionally, immigrant men who are applying for citizenship can significantly complicate the process of becoming citizens if they fail to register.
The registration process is quick and easy. It can be completed online at www.sss.gov, by filling out a registration card available at any U.S. Post Office, on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA form), or at school through a Selective Service registrar.
