Rush hour is the period of time from approximately 4:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. - much longer than an hour - when drivers leave their place of work and flood out of the city back towards their homes. This typically results in bumper to bumper traffic, honking horns, and infinite frustration.

Back to School driving introduces two new periods of rush hour to Phoenix streets. Most schools start sometime between 7 and 8 A.M. and end between 2 and 3 P.M. Well over a million children attend our Arizona schools and each and every one of these kids needs to be transported back and forth between home and school. All of these individuals walk, ride their bikes, take the family car, or ride the bus. This means there is a lot of additional traffic clogging up our narrow roads. A rise in traffic usually leads to a rise in collision totals.
Reduced speed limits are also used in school zones during the hours when children are moving back and forth between school and home. These reduced speed limits are put in place to keep children safe, as pedestrian activity is usually high around school zones. Although these reductions in speed limit are designed to keep people safe, sometimes they can cause collisions. Some drivers do not anticipate the reduction in speed limit and end up rear ending or hitting other drivers.
