Hayman-Woodward : 70 million Brazilians want to leave Brazil according to research institute
Favorite destination: The US issued 3.366 immigrant visas for Brazilians in 2017
WASHINGTON, July 5, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the Brazilian research institute Datafolha, about 70 million Brazilians over the age of 16 wish to leave Brazil. It is a third of the country's population, now estimated at 210 million inhabitants. This statistic is even more alarming among those between 16 and 24 years of age: 62% of Brazilians within this age group (approximately 19 million people) expressed the desire to migrate to other countries.
The negative political, economic and security situation, in addition to the high unemployment rate, are fundamental factors for this "exodus" of Brazilians. There is, in general, great pessimism and frustration with the current crisis in Brazil, especially after the period of prosperity that the country experienced at the beginning of this decade.
Another reason that influences the decision to leave Brazil is the abundance of good job opportunities in foreign countries--especially for those with advanced academic training--in areas where there is a worldwide demand for skilled professionals, such as engineering, IT, health, etc.
Not surprisingly, Brazilians' favorite destination (the US) issued Brazilian nationals 3,366 immigrant visas in 2017, which is double the amount that had been issued in 2008. It is estimated that today, 1.3 million Brazilians (including legal and illegal immigrants) reside in the US, mainly in the state of Florida.
In recent years, highly qualified Brazilian professionals and entrepreneurs have discovered that they qualify for immigrant visas–and therefore Green Cards–within the categories EB-1A (extraordinary abilities) and EB-2 NIW (National Interest Waiver). These categories provide the possibility of legal immigration in certain areas of employment that are in need of skilled labor, without the need for a job offer or an employer as a sponsor. These visas are based solely on the candidate's professional and academic background (if their diploma is valid in the US).
The EB-1A and EB-2 NIW visa categories can benefit professionals with at least a bachelor degree and five years of progressive postgraduate work; or in the alternative, people who demonstrate a specific skill in a particular occupation. Both visa categories provide an array of opportunities for those who seek to expatriate to the US.
