Hazelden To Open Innovative Tribeca Residence in Affiliation with Columbia Psychiatry for College Students in Recovery from Addiction

CENTER CITY, Minn., March 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hazelden, one of the world's largest and most respected private, nonprofit alcohol and drug addiction treatment centers, announced today that it will open a first-of-its-kind collegiate recovery residence called Tribeca Twelve in New York City's Tribeca neighborhood.

The innovative recovery program, scheduled to open this summer at 283 West Broadway, will offer young adults in recovery from addiction an independent living environment with fully integrated support services, access to many recreational activities and special events. Hazelden's Tribeca Twelve collegiate recovery residence is ideal for young adults attending college or planning to return to college, and looking for an exciting and welcoming place to live, develop healthy friendships and achieve success. Experts at Columbia's College Student Program, a unique intervention program for college-age individuals with psychiatric disorders, will provide access to supportive treatment services.

The program will be open to men and women, age 18 to 29, who are participating in or have completed an addiction treatment program, are committed to their sobriety, and are either attending college or planning to return to college. The program will be available to all colleges and universities in New York City.  

Housed in a completely renovated 1910 building, the Hazelden program will accommodate 30 residents, with six men or six women on each of the five floors. Distinctive programming features include:

• dedicated recovery coaches to provide individual coaching, education, academic liaison services, special events and activities, and structured monitoring
• individualized recovery care plans designed to support the young adults' sobriety, academic programming, and work life
• coordination of care with independent treatment providers
• peer support and activities to address concerns and celebrate successes
• drug testing to detect possible relapse and allow for early intervention to restore sobriety or transfer to a higher level of care
• special programs and services to support lifelong recovery

A unique affiliation between Hazelden and Columbia University's Department of Psychiatry will open new doors for young adults who have complex co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, such as depression or bipolar disorder. Columbia University's highly regarded College Student Program has provided specialized outpatient treatment for addiction and mental health disorders since 1983. The affiliation with Hazelden's new collegiate recovery program creates a seamless continuum of clinical treatment for Columbia's College Student Program by providing a recovery housing component.
