Head-up Display Market Forecast to Grow Five-fold by 2030 Says just-auto's QUBE Analysts

The latest forecasts for light vehicle Cockpits and Instrumentation published by just-auto's QUBE automotive research service demonstrate the emerging opportunity for head-up displays (HUDs) in the industry.

The technology's pace of adoption is expected to lead to its growth outpacing that of the overall global light vehicle industry. Head-up displays, in use since 1988 when General Motors adopted it for the Corvette C5, are forecast to grow at a long-term (2020-2030) CAGR of 8.8% compared to the industry comparable CAGR of a meagre 2%.

According to just-auto's QUBE analysts, the long-term growth prospects for HUDs are a marked acceleration on the 2015-2020 CAGR of 5.7%, as costs of the technology decline and a trickle-down begins from the premium manufacturers, with real growth set to emanate from executive and high-end mid-sized light vehicles.

HUD growth, states just-auto's car market watchers, is tied to the ever increasing interest in ADAS (advanced driving assistance solutions) technologies. This is exemplified by the 2016MY Audi A4 and its Traffic Jam Assist, Predictive Efficiency Assist and Turning Assist. HUDs are expected to be able to deliver reductions in driver distraction by reducing the time that drivers' eyes are off the road.

An additional factor in the expected growth in HUD penetration is the increasing integration of mobile phone features and satellite navigation into vehicle displays, far beyond the simple speed and engine revolution readouts that drivers of twenty years ago were presented with.

Of the traditional light vehicle manufacturing Triad, long-term growth opportunities for HUDs are judged to be most promising in Europe which is expected to grow at a long-term CAGR of 11.4%, followed by North America with 6.9% and Japan with 4.8%.

Of the BRICs, India's long-term growth CAGR is judged to be the strongest at 21.5%, followed by Brazil with 14.6%, Russia with 13.4% and China with 8%. In absolute size Europe will lead the way in 2030 with over 4.7m HUDs in 2030, followed by North America with 3.4m and China with 2.5m.

All told, just-auto estimates that nearly 10% of light vehicles produced in 2030 will be fitted with HUDs, a five-fold increase from the penetration today - enough to give a total HUD market volume in 2030 of 12.5m.
