HEALTHCARE ACCESS MARYLAND PARTNERS WITH CENTURION HEALTH TO ASSIST JUSTICE-INVOLVED INDIVIDUALS RE-ENTER SOCIETY

Both teams to help individuals maintain active Medicaid coverage

BALTIMORE, Feb. 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthCare Access Maryland (HCAM) and Centurion Health have established a five-year partnership that will ensure that all justice-involved individuals in Maryland correctional services have active Medicaid coverage to support their re-entry into the community and have continuity of care.

HealthCare Access Maryland has hired a team of 14 certified application counselors to provide enrollment assistance to justice-involved individuals. These counselors will provide further education to individuals to help them understand their health benefits and how to use them to access vital healthcare services.

Justice-involved individuals can often have a wide range of complex healthcare needs and conditions, making the continuity of care an invaluable asset. Research shows that Medicaid coverage at release is tied to formerly justice-involved people being more likely to receive community-based health services and accessing services in a more timely manner than those without.

Furthermore, a study of Medicaid enrollment and mental health service use among individuals with mental health needs, found that individuals enrolled in Medicaid at release received community health services more quickly than those without coverage, and received more health services within 90 days of release.
