Healthpoint Biotherapeutics Receives Bronze Stevie® Award In 2012 American Business Awards (SM)
SENSES Program Developed to Help Prevent Pressure Ulcers
FORT WORTH, Texas, Sept. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthpoint Biotherapeutics today announced it has been named a 2012 Bronze STEVIE® Award Winner for the Video-Training category in The 10th Annual American Business Awards. The award was granted for the SENSES Program, a training DVD with accompanying poster, training card and recognition pins, developed to educate caregivers in the long-term care setting on how to recognize the signs of potential pressure ulcer development.
"By using one's senses to carefully observe the patient, then effectively sharing those observations, everyone is contributing to pressure ulcer prevention," commented Diane L. Krasner, PhD, RN, CWS, MAPWCA, FAAN. "Pressure ulcers come at a high cost to everyone, so recognizing and treating a developing ulcer at a much earlier stage is in the best interest of both patients and our healthcare system."
Pressure ulcers are one of the most serious and pervasive problems in U.S. nursing homes. They are caused by unrelieved pressure that is often associated with immobility and which damages underlying tissue. The SENSES Program utilizes natural senses to identify pressure ulcer risks during routine patient care. These natural SENSES include: Look, Listen, Smell, Touch and, finally, Share observations with colleagues and in documentation. This simple program is the first step to identify pressure ulcer risk and improve patient lives.
"We are very pleased to have been honored with a Stevie® Award for this important educational and training program," said Komel Grover, Senior Director, Medical Education and Scientific Communications at Healthpoint Biotherapeutics. "It is our hope that the tools in the SENSES Program will assist healthcare providers with their goal of pressure ulcer prevention."
More than 3,000 nominations from organizations of all sizes and in virtually every industry were submitted for consideration in the 2012 Annual American Business Awards. Stevie® Award winners were selected by more than 270 executives nationwide who participated in the judging process this year. About Pressure Ulcers
Pressure ulcers, less frequently known as decubitus ulcers, pressure sores or bed sores, are caused by unrelieved pressure that damages underlying tissue. These wounds typically develop below the waist over bony areas such as the hips, lower back or heel. Pressure ulcers often affect people in hospitals or nursing homes, or others who are unable to move due to injury or disease. Moisture-associated skin damage due to incontinence can further contribute to pressure ulcer development.
Pressure ulcers are estimated to affect as many as 3 million people in the U.S. annually, including up to 28% of patients in long-term care. In addition, pressure ulcers account for some $3.2 billion dollars of the total $17.1 billion dollar annual cost of medical errors, underscoring the important role for wound care clinicians in early diagnosis and treatment.
