Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Announces Good Deeds for 2017 - 2018

As the 2018 Spring semester begins, two worthy college students received scholarship awards of $1,000 each to help pay for tuition. The Animal Advocate Scholarship is designated for a student with significant volunteer experience enrolled in an accredited institution in the United States, and the Veterinary Student Scholarship is designated for a student enrolled in an accredited vet medicine program in the United States. Recipients are chosen based on educational merits and extracurricular dedication to improving animal welfare.

Spring 2018 Recipients

• Stephanie Han, Animal Advocate Scholarship Recipient

"This award will help me to achieve my goal of becoming a shelter veterinarian," says winner Stephanie Han. "I want to be able to ensure that all shelters around the world are keeping animals happy and healthy and providing the public with a positive experience." Ms. Han is entering UC Davis, California.

• Emily Plock, Veterinary Student Scholarship Recipient

"I have always had a passion for animals, whether it was nurturing unwanted stray cats back to health or bottle-feeding calves on my grandpa's farm. My interest for veterinary medicine, however, truly developed the moment I grasped a newborn lamb from an ewe's womb and pulled it into the world for its first breath," explains winner Emily Plock. "It was at that moment I knew that becoming a veterinarian was my destiny. The Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Scholarship will help offset the high cost of veterinary school. This will allow me to focus on what is truly important; the health and wellbeing of animals." Ms. Plock attends Iowa State.

Healthy Paws Joins Forces with the SF SPCA

Additionally, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance donated a grant of $50,000 to the SF SPCA, earmarked for medical care and to help end animal abandonment in the San Francisco Bay area. As the largest animal welfare organization on the West Coast and founders of the No-Kill movement, the SF SPCA has always been at the forefront of animal welfare.

Through this grant, they were able to continue to treat upwards of 5,500 animals annually and continue daily operations. One of the two programs that received support was the continuation of the SF SPCA's Community Cares program (mobile vaccine clinics serving low-income neighborhoods in San Francisco). Each year thousands of animals receive free veterinary exams and vaccinations through these mobile clinics. "The Healthy Paws grant has provided vital funds that allow us to help some of the neediest animals that come into our shelter," says Cynthia Kopec, Chief Operations Officer (COO) at the SF SPCA.

The other program that benefitted was SPORE (Shelters Preventing Outbreaks of Ringworm through Education), which helps animals who have contracted ringworm, a highly contagious fungal infection that can take several weeks to treat. "Most shelters simply aren't equipped to handle ringworm cases, and animals who contract ringworm are often euthanized," continues Ms. Kopec. "The program not only gives animals with ringworm a second chance, but also aims to teach other shelters how they can do the same."
