WHIPPANY, N.J., Dec. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials of HEI Hotels & Resorts (HEI), the nation's fastest growing private owner/operator of hotel real estate, today announced the completion of phase one of a $20 million renovation to the lobby, lounge, front desk, restaurant and public space of the Hanover Marriott in Whippany, New Jersey. Special attention was given to using environmentally friendly construction methods and sustainable materials from renewable resources throughout the process. The second phase will begin in the fourth quarter of this year and will focus on the hotel's 353 guest rooms, including installation of flat-screen televisions, new furniture, and luxurious bedding.
"We are developing a strong tradition of using the latest technologies at our properties to minimize the impact on the environment while reducing overhead costs," said Steve Mendell, president—acquisitions and development. "We worked closely with the renovation team to create a beautifully organic and elemental atmosphere through the use of natural stone, wood, water and earth designs. Also, we are striving to foster a program in which we replant and replace trees used for wood in building materials."
The first phase of renovation, which encompassed all the public areas, focused on sustainability. To conserve energy, all daytime lights now have auto-dimming capabilities based on available natural light. Water-saving showerheads and toilets were installed to reduce wasting of water resources. Additionally, all lighting, heating and air conditioning systems were updated with sensor controls.
"We used easily recycled or reclaimed materials, such as bamboo and wool, in the production of our case and soft goods," said Robert Morgan, general manager. "We reused or donated all removed items where allowable. We are very committed to minimizing our carbon footprint even as we provide the services and amenities most sought after by today's travelers."
Located at 1401 Route 10 E, in Whippany, N.J., the 353-room Hanover Marriott is 24 miles from Newark Liberty International Airport and 40 miles from New York City. The hotel features 18,850 square feet of flexible meeting space; eco-friendly fitness center with free weights, pilates equipment and LCD televisions on all cardio equipment; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; and two on-site dining options, Auld Shebeen and Seed's.
