Financial Advisor magazine's annual RIA ranking is based on the percentage of growth in assets under management (AUM) from the previous year. However, an accompanying article in Financial Advisor magazine points out that among the 612 RIA firms surveyed, more than one-third reported a decline in AUM last year. Two years of poor market conditions and increasing regulatory burdens were cited as possible contributors to reduced growth. Bucking the trend, Heron Financial experienced tremendous growth over that same time period, rising from less than $100 million in asset as of January 2011 to $250 million through July 2016.
